The fast track to employee wine knowledge: Harnessing the power of short educational videos

In this post, we'll explore how short educational videos can revolutionize wine education in the restaurant industry, not only improving the guest experience but also boosting staff confidence and knowledge. By investing in effective training, restaurants and hotels not only create a more informed staff; you also build the foundation stones for a learning organization where continuous improvement and excellence in guest service are the norm.

The need for effective training in the hotel and restaurant industry

In a world where food and drink experiences are becoming increasingly central, the restaurant industry faces increased demands on quality and knowledge. Especially when it comes to wine.

The world of wine is vast and ever-changing, with new vintages, regions and grape varieties entering the scene every year.

This places high demands on the staff's ability to stay up-to-date and be able to share their knowledge in a way that is both informative and accessible.

The traditional way of teaching – through thick manuals and sporadic training sessions – is no longer enough. In a rapidly changing world, methods are needed that are as dynamic and engaging as the subject they intend to convey.

Especially for seasonal staff and those new to the industry

Especially for seasonal workers and those new to the industry, the challenges can be even greater. These employees need to get up to speed quickly to meet customer expectations and contribute to the restaurant's success. Short training videos play a crucial role here. They offer a quick and efficient way for new staff and seasonal workers to gain the basic knowledge they need, with the opportunity to easily repeat and deepen their knowledge over time.

The wine suppliers play a key role

The wine suppliers play a key role in this educational process. By offering customized training videos, they can not only help educate restaurant staff about their specific products, but also provide an insight into the world of wine production. This partnership between restaurants and wine suppliers facilitates a deeper understanding and appreciation of wine, which directly translates into improved service and customer satisfaction.

Case. Example

A few years ago we worked with a restaurant where the restaurant's employees were young, energetic and had a great attitude towards serivce. The challenge was that they had no knowledge of wine.

With the help of Pompette Dryckehandel, we recorded short films on our most common wines. 3 red wines, 3 white wines.

We put the videos in our training platform, where we could see which of the employees had gone through the clips. We could then, in a coaching and positive way, remind the employees who had not gone through the films.

The butler and restaurant manager could then, at the evening briefing, involve the employees by having the employees tell about what they learned, the managers could then praise the employees' progress, try the wines they were talking about and practice how they could present the wines to the guests.

What struck us was how quickly the employees absorbed enough knowledge to feel safe in the guest meeting, small historical anecdotes, to how terrorism affects the taste of wine.

Blended learning

By leveraging the latest technology and educational strategies, restaurants can transform the way wine education is delivered and perceived. This means a transition from static and time-consuming educational methods to a more flexible, engaging and effective learning process. With short videos, staff can quickly and easily access the information they need, exactly when they need it, enabling a service experience that stands out.
